I caught a video recently of Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos talking about SEO tips for your website to improve the ranking that was so informative and jam packed that I had to share the information.  There’s too much for a single post, so I’ll be breaking it up into several.

First things first ~

Your Own Website and Why it’s So Important

If you are branding yourself on your website, which is recommended, then it makes sense to get a domain name that IS your name.  Most people should be able to get “yourname.com”.

If you’re one of those people who have a really common name, like I do, you may find that it’s already been taken, but “yourname.net” may be available.

Go to www.GoDaddy.comand do a domain search to see what’s available.  It’s around $10 to own a domain.com for a year.  You don’t need to purchase anything else there.

Have a self hosted site. WordPress.org is free, easy, and perfect for setting up a blog to be your website.

Hosting is minimal too.  Host Gator offers several different plans.  It’s less than $10 per month if you pay monthly, pay in advance and get better rates.  Be sure to get the “baby” plan, for almost the same price as hosting a single domain, you get unlimited hosting.

Points to remember when setting up your site:

  • Make it Look and Feel good ~ there are so many sites out there, make yours stand out by being attractive, with a good feel to it
  • Convert Visitors into Leads ~ you want conversions, so there isn’t any point to having a nice site if nothing comes from it.  Teach what you already know, and teach new information as you’re learning it, so that your visitors will want to keep hearing more.  If you’re particularly talented at one skill, focus on teaching that, for example your specialty may be ~ prospecting, generating leads, phone skills, etc
  • Have an Optin Box ~ right near the top of your site have an optin box to collect names and email addresses of visitors so you can follow up with them.   Continue to give valuable information to them through emails and start building a relationship with them

What you want to create is a website where you’re branding yourself.  Rather than promoting a specific opportunity or product, you’re promoting yourself, and your value.

Let your visitors get to know you, and from your site you can then send them to any other website that you promote.

You want people to look to you as a leader that they’ll want to follow.  This is why you brand yourself on your site, instead of a specific business.   What if you have several you’re promoting?  Or, what if you want to leave the one you’re with and switch to another?

You want their loyalty to be with YOU, not with any particular company, so if you join something new, they’ll come along with you.

Having your OWN site, that you are in complete control of, is the only way to go to be successful.

In this day of one replicated site after another, the last thing you want is to be is another one of those.  Google won’t even look twice at it, as  they only reward unique sites by giving those free traffic.

I’m sure you’ve probably seen sites that were identical and used by a zillion different people. If someone is out there looking for a leader to teach them, how could they possibly get a feeling for a person who’s using a generic site like that, and whether or not that person would be a good fit for them to connect with?

Be watching for the next post which will go further into detail about traffic, website organization, tags, and much more useful information on optimizing your site.
